BCR Seeks a Lead Coach

Boulder Community Rowing is a post-collegiate, master’s level rowing club with a mission to grow the life-changing sport of rowing throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region and to give a diverse group of participants the opportunity to grow individual skill sets and to flourish in team boats. We row on Boulder Reservoir and offer a range of coached programs for sweeps and sculling.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated Lead Coach for the spring/summer/fall seasons with potential year-round opportunities. Pay will be based on availability and experience starting at $75 a practice.

Additional coaching opportunities will be available with the co-located juniors program, for interested candidates.

Preferred start date is April 15, 2024.

Lead coach responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work in tandem with assistant coaches and relevant committees to:

  • Develop and supervise team practice and conditioning sessions with an emphasis on technical skill development and race training.

  • Provide appropriate instruction to athletes both on and off the water, with the goal of maintaining good morale and retention rates, and help all members advance in fitness, technical ability, and competitive potential.

  • Evaluate each athlete’s ability and advise on which practices are appropriate.

  • Identify participant and equipment availability for regattas.

  • Supervise at competitive events when possible.

  • Execute safety protocols and ensure the safety of rowers and equipment

  • Attend periodic coaching committee meetings; Advise board of directors of equipment or other needs

Job Type: Contract (part-time)

Pay: $75 - $95 a practice (depending on experience). Approx 3 - 5 practices per week.

Experience / Requirements:

  • Team management expertise (experience coaching rowing desired)

  • Demonstrated understanding of erging/rowing technique for both sculling and sweep

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively (explain concepts clearly, be receptive to changing approach, etc)

  • Ability to create and maintain a safe, positive atmosphere for participants to develop into competitive athletes

  • Prior Masters coaching experience preferred

  • First Aid / CPR training (or willing to obtain)

  • Colorado Boating Safety Course certification (or willing to obtain)
